Counted writing grids: 600~1,600 cells
Choose a counted grid when you want a fixed number of boxes for handwriting practice. Each preset has 25 columns. Choose a preset under More settings, use the paper selector at the top, or follow a size link in the table. Download the PDF once the preview shows the layout you need. A cell count does not measure English or Spanish words.
| Numbered cells | Columns×rows×pages | Cell size (A4 portrait) | Between rows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 600 cells | 25 columns×24 rows×1 page | About 7.2 mm | With row gaps |
| 800 cells | 25 columns×32 rows×1 page | About 7.2 mm | No row gaps |
| 1,000 cells | 25 columns×40 rows×1 page | About 6.7 mm | No row gaps |
| 1,200 cells | 25 columns×24 rows×2 pages | About 7.2 mm | With row gaps |
| 1,600 cells | 25 columns×32 rows×2 pages | About 7.2 mm | No row gaps |
The 1,200- and 1,600-cell presets use two pages of the 600- and 800-cell layouts. Numbering continues on page 2, with the first hundred-cell marks at 700 and 900. PDF filenames include the total numbered cell count and page count. A PNG contains only page 1. For another total, change columns, rows and pages, then enable continuous numbering.
These are A4 practice sheets, not official examination answer forms. A required form may use different paper, margins, spacing or numbering. Check the instructions from your school, teacher or examination provider and use its original form where required. In particular, do not treat a grid of 600 boxes as a 600-word essay sheet. For free-form English or Spanish writing, lined paper is usually the more suitable starting point.
How to make printable A4 paper for writing, music and graphs
Instead of searching for a fixed PDF whose lines are too dark or whose spacing is wrong, create a sheet from its dimensions in your browser. Choose among five paper families and sixteen presets, adjust the settings, and download a vector PDF. The line coordinates are stored in millimeters, so zooming keeps them sharp. A PNG is also available when you need an image of the first page. Printing at actual size is essential if you need the stated millimeter spacing.
Writing grids include 20×20 and 20×10 cells plus five counted presets with 25 columns. Graph paper supports 1~20 mm spacing; lined paper supports 5~15 mm spacing and an optional left margin line. Music paper has single staves or paired piano staves, with fitted counts shown in the summary. Handwriting squares use 5~16 columns and optional dotted cross guides. All five families share portrait/landscape A4, five line colors, three weights and an optional title or date/name header.
Useful tasks
- Print writing grids with a fixed number of cells for East Asian character practice.
- Make 1 mm or 5 mm graph paper for math, charts and measured sketches.
- Print blank music staves or staff pairs for piano and composition practice.
- Make large handwriting squares with cross guides, or lined sheets for notes.
Before you start
- Use A4 paper (210×297 mm), not US Letter, and select 100% or actual size in the print dialog.
- Match the printer orientation to the selected portrait or landscape layout.
- Choose thin gray lines to save ink, or a heavier line weight for clearer copies.
How to use it
- Choose a paper type from the selector. The preview and size summary update immediately.
- Open More settings if you need to change cells, spacing, paper orientation, color or line weight.
- Add a title or enable date/name fields if needed. Increase the page count for multiple sheets.
- Download the PDF for printing. Download PNG if you need a 300 dpi image of page 1.
- In the print dialog, confirm A4 paper, 100% (actual size) and the correct orientation before printing.
Choosing spacing for lines, grids and music
Start with 8 mm lined paper for roomy notes, or 6 mm when you want more lines per page. A 5 mm grid suits math and diagrams; a 1 mm grid provides finer guides for measured drawings. The handwriting presets provide large square cells with optional cross guides. For music, 2 mm between staff lines makes each five-line staff 8 mm high. Fewer staves leave more room for lyrics and annotations. Enabling a title or date/name fields reduces the space available for the body. Check the resulting cell size or fitted staff count in the summary.
What a writing-grid cell count means
Writing grids are useful for East Asian character practice and other exercises where one symbol occupies a box. The 400-cell preset has 20 columns and 20 rows. A box is not a word, and this tool does not count text typed into the title. Number marks show progress every hundred cells; with continuous numbering, later pages continue that sequence. For ordinary English or Spanish sentences, lined paper leaves words free to vary in length. Use instructions from your teacher for the writing conventions of a particular exercise.
Dimensions are calculated for A4. Printer margins and scaling can change the physical result. If an institution requires an official form, use that original form. The body margin is 12 mm, but the piano joining line extends 1.6 mm farther left, to about 10.4 mm from the paper edge. Check that your printer can print this area on a first sheet.
Method and sources
- Scope
- Create A4 writing grids, graph paper, lined sheets, music staves and handwriting squares as vector PDF or PNG. These practice sheets do not replace official examination forms.
- Method
- Paper is laid out in millimeters on A4. Writing cells fit the smaller available dimension; graph grids use complete cells and are centered. Lined paper follows the selected spacing. Music uses five-line staves, optionally paired, with counts reduced when needed to fit the page. Lines and numbers are PDF vectors; titles and header labels are high-resolution images. PNG saves page 1 at 300 dpi. Page numbering, cell counters, title length and input limits are checked.
- Limitations
- Printer margins and scaling affect the physical dimensions. Use an official template whenever one is required.
- Privacy
- Paper is drawn and exported in the current browser. Settings and titles are not sent to a server or saved.

FAQ
Which paper types and sizes can I make?
Choose from sixteen presets across lined paper, graph paper, music paper, writing grids and handwriting squares. Output is A4 only, 210×297 mm, in portrait or landscape. US Letter is not an output option. The default is 8 mm lined paper. Open More settings for custom spacing, colors, line weight and optional header fields. A PDF can contain up to 30 pages; a PNG contains page 1 only.
How do I print at the correct physical size?
Load A4 paper and choose 100% or actual size, with the same orientation as the file. Fit-to-page can shrink the spacing. The body uses 12 mm margins; a piano staff joining line extends 1.6 mm farther left, to about 10.4 mm from the edge. A title or header reduces the available body height. Printer hardware can still limit the printable area, so check a first sheet before using it for measurements.
How should I choose the spacing?
Lined presets use 6 or 8 mm, and custom line spacing runs from 5 to 15 mm. Graph presets offer 1, 5 and 10 mm squares, with custom spacing from 1 to 20 mm in 0.5 mm steps. You can change major-line intervals, color and weight. Handwriting squares provide larger boxes with optional cross guides. Use the dedicated Graph Paper tool if you need dot grids or a 50 mm scale ruler.
Does the music paper include clefs or notes?
No clefs or notes are preprinted. Single-staff paper repeats five-line staves; the piano preset groups them into pairs with a joining line. Its portrait default fits six pairs, or twelve staves. Line spacing is adjustable from 1.5 to 3 mm. A landscape sheet, wider spacing or a title can fit fewer staves. The summary reports the number actually drawn. Add the clefs and notation you need after printing.
Do 400 grid cells mean 400 words, and is my title saved?
A writing-grid cell is a box, not a word. The 400-cell preset is 20×20 boxes and the 200-cell preset is 20×10. Counted presets can continue hundred-cell numbering across two pages. They suit character-writing exercises; choose lined paper for free-form sentences. Titles are limited to 30 characters and are preserved as entered. Date/name fields are optional. Settings and titles stay in the browser and are not sent or saved.
