EV efficiency and fuel-cost guide
An EV is measured here in km/kWh, while the comparison car uses km/L. Their raw numbers are not directly comparable. This calculator finds the fuel economy that would travel the same distance for the same energy cost. Cost-equivalent km/L = EV efficiency × (fuel price ÷ electricity price). The reverse cost-parity threshold is comparison km/L × (electricity price ÷ fuel price). Use consistent USD/kWh and USD/L prices.
With 5.1km/kWh, electricity at $0.30/kWh and gasoline at $1.60/L, the cost equivalent is 27.2km/L. In the reverse direction, a 12km/L car has the same per-km fuel cost as an EV at 2.25km/kWh with those prices. The visible threshold rounds upward to 2.3km/kWh. This compares fuel spending only; purchase price, insurance, taxes, maintenance and charging losses are excluded.

When this tool is needed
- When you want a cost-based comparison between dashboard EV efficiency and a fuel-powered car.
- When estimating how a switch to an EV could change your monthly fuel spending.
- When comparing home, public and higher-power charging with the prices you actually pay.
Before entering data
- Use km/kWh for your model year, drivetrain and wheels, or your measured dashboard average. Korean-market preset ratings may differ from a local-market version.
- Starting prices are editable USD examples, not current US tariffs or fuel-price quotes. Replace them with your own per-kWh and per-liter prices.
- Comparison-car classes use example km/L values. Enter your own measured fuel economy when available.
How to use
- Select a vehicle chip or enter dashboard/specification efficiency in km/kWh.
- Check cost-equivalent km/L and the reverse cost-parity efficiency threshold.
- Choose a charging-price example and gasoline or diesel, or enter your own unit prices.
- Choose comparison fuel economy and monthly distance.
- Review monthly charging, fuel costs and savings. Copy the results with their assumptions and vehicle-data basis.
How charging prices affect fuel costs
The same EV can have different running costs at different charging prices. In the fixed example above, 5.2km/kWh and 1,500km per month give charging costs of $57.69 at $0.20/kWh and $144.23 at $0.50/kWh. These are illustration prices, not official tariffs or a claim that charger power determines price. Actual billing can depend on provider, contract, time, membership and extra fees. Enter a comparable energy-only price when using this model; session or time-based charges require separate treatment.
Cost equivalence and energy equivalence
The separate energy reference multiplies efficiency by about 8.9kWh per liter of gasoline. Thus 5.1km/kWh corresponds to about 45.4km/L on that approximate energy basis. It is related to the idea behind MPGe, but is not an official MPGe test result. The cost result is instead 27.2km/L with the illustrative $0.30/kWh and $1.60/L prices. For that reason, the main result uses prices, and the energy reference stays collapsed until requested.
Limits and sources
Cost-equivalent economy and savings are estimates from the chosen prices and efficiencies. Actual charging and fuel costs vary by place, time, contract and driving conditions. The Korean charging-rate news report and Korea National Oil Corporation Opinet belong to the dated Korean version; they are not the source of the editable USD examples. The original vehicle-data and calculation review is dated 2026-10-21.
This estimates fuel spending, not total ownership cost or an actual bill. Check your exact vehicle configuration and the prices you pay before using the figures in a budget.
Calculation basis and sources
- Calculation scope
- Compare cost-equivalent fuel economy, cost-parity efficiency and monthly fuel costs from km/kWh, electricity/fuel prices, comparison km/L and distance. Vehicle presets are dated Korean-certified configurations; native prices are editable examples.
- Calculation method
- Cost-equivalent km/L = EV efficiency × (fuel price ÷ electricity price). Cost-parity km/kWh = comparison km/L × (electricity price ÷ fuel price). Cost per km = unit price ÷ efficiency; monthly cost = cost per km × distance. The separate energy reference is efficiency × approx. 8.9kWh/L.
- Limits and disclaimer
- Fuel-spending estimate from your inputs. Excludes vehicle price, tax, insurance, maintenance and charging losses. Actual prices, efficiency and driving conditions can differ.
- Personal information processing
- Input values are calculated only in the current browser and are not sent to a server or stored.

FAQ
How do you convert EV km/kWh to cost-equivalent km/L?
Multiply EV km/kWh by fuel price per liter divided by electricity price per kWh. For example, 5.1km/kWh × ($1.60/L ÷ $0.30/kWh) = 27.2km/L. This is the fuel economy of a car traveling the same distance for the same energy cost. The separate energy reference, 5.1 × approx. 8.9kWh/L ≈ 45.4km/L, does not use prices.
Can you convert fuel economy back to a cost-parity EV efficiency?
Yes. Cost-parity km/kWh = comparison km/L × (electricity price ÷ fuel price). A 12km/L car with $0.30/kWh and $1.60/L matches an EV at 2.25km/kWh. The visible threshold rounds upward to 2.3km/kWh. Higher EV efficiency uses less energy per km, so it reduces fuel spending under the same prices. Changing the comparison km/L also changes the monthly fuel cost.
How much can the electricity price change charging costs?
The four charging-price examples are $0.20, $0.30, $0.40 and $0.50 per kWh. At 5.2km/kWh and 1,500km per month, they give monthly charging costs from $57.69 to $144.23, with gasoline at $1.60/L used for the cost-equivalent comparison. These are illustrative assumptions, not official tariffs or a pricing rule tied to charger power. Enter the actual price on your bill or charging receipt.
Which electricity and fuel prices should I enter?
Enter your actual energy price per kWh and fuel price per liter, both in USD. Starting values of $0.30/kWh and $1.60/L are editable calculation examples, not current price quotes. Charging can include time, session, parking or membership fees that this energy-only model does not automatically include. Convert per-gallon prices to per-liter prices before entering them.
Does the tool save my input on a server?
No. Calculations use your entered efficiency, prices and distance in the current browser. Those input values are not sent to a server or stored. Refreshing clears the entered values.
