Clean lines and format paragraphs

Join broken lines, choose a paragraph format and copy the result.

Output line breaks use LF, and repeated blank lines separate paragraphs. Both rules apply regardless of the normalization and empty-paragraph checkboxes.

You can edit and copy the result. Counts describe the last automatic conversion. Changing the source or settings regenerates the output and replaces manual edits.

How to remove line breaks and clean text

Clean broken lines and unwanted spacing in text copied from PDFs, papers, messages or web pages. Copying from a page layout can leave line breaks inside a sentence, which may also affect how a translation tool interprets it. Join those lines with spaces, with hyphens or without a separator. Keep paragraphs separate, merge them, add tab indents or generate HTML paragraph markup. The result stays editable, and Copy result takes the current output to your clipboard.

Text cleanup runs in the current browser. This tool does not upload the text to a Toolvil server or save it there. Copying writes the result to the operating system clipboard only when you press the button. You can edit the output, but the counts still describe the last automatic conversion; changing the source or settings regenerates it. Keep a separate original and check that your chosen format preserves the intended meaning.

When this tool is needed

  • Join lines copied from a PDF or paper before passing the text to a translator
  • Join code or data lines without adding spaces
  • Wrap paragraphs in HTML tags before pasting into a blog or website editor

Before converting

  • Check carefully when spacing and line breaks carry meaning, as in code, tables or poetry.
  • HTML tag modes escape literal angle brackets in the input.
  • Choose hyphen joining only when you want new hyphens, such as in a phone number or code.

How to use

  1. Paste the text into the source field.
  2. Choose how to join line breaks: a space, no separator or a hyphen.
  3. Choose a paragraph style: keep, merge, tab indent or HTML.
  4. Open Advanced settings if needed, and check the always-applied LF and paragraph rules.
  5. Use Copy result to take the current output.

The 3 ways to join lines

Space joins lines inside a paragraph with a space. No separator joins those same lines without a separator. To combine paragraphs separated by blank lines too, choose Merge paragraphs. Hyphen inserts a new hyphen between lines; it does not remove existing hyphens or repair split words. Compare code, formulas and phone numbers with the original before using the result.

Paragraph styles and HTML tags

Keep paragraphs preserves groups separated by blank lines. Merge paragraphs combines them into one block, and Tab indent adds a tab before each paragraph. HTML p wraps paragraphs, while HTML br inserts breaks between them, after joining lines within each paragraph. Input angle brackets are escaped as text so they do not become unintended tags.

What the counts and line-ending rules mean

Character counts use Unicode code points rather than visible character clusters. HTML tags, escape sequences and tabs are part of the output string, so its character count can increase. The editor displays CRLF and CR as LF. Paragraph conversion always uses LF and blank-line paragraph boundaries, regardless of the two related checkboxes. This is not a tool for removing every kind of Unicode whitespace or preserving the original file's line-ending bytes.

Preparing text for translation

Try joining lines with spaces while keeping paragraphs before translation. This does not automatically detect split words, existing hyphens, table-column order or a PDF's reading order. Cleaning line breaks does not guarantee better translation. Check numbers, names and context, and pass only the text you need to the translator.

Handling text with personal information

Cleanup happens in the current browser without this tool uploading or saving the input text on a server. Copied output may remain on the clipboard, so check the input, output and clipboard after working on a shared device. Browser-side processing alone is not a guarantee for every aspect of confidential-document security. Keep a separate original.

This utility reformats line breaks, spaces and paragraphs. It does not correct spelling, summarize content or preserve table and code structure automatically. Review text whose spacing carries meaning before using the output.

FAQ

Why does text copied from a PDF have broken lines?

Copying from a PDF can preserve the ends of printed lines as text line breaks. This tool cleans pasted text; it does not read PDF files or perform OCR. Joining with spaces can reconnect lines within a sentence, but words, tables and context still need review.

When should I use each of the 3 line-joining modes?

Space is useful for joining sentence lines copied from PDFs or papers. Remove is for lines that should meet without a separator, as in some code or data. Hyphen adds new hyphens where you want them, such as between parts of a phone number or code.

When should I use the HTML paragraph and break options?

The paragraph option wraps each paragraph in HTML p tags. The break option puts br tags between paragraphs, after joining the lines inside them. Input ampersands and angle brackets are escaped as text. Paste into the destination editor's HTML source mode and check the result. Adding tags alone does not guarantee search rankings.

How can I prepare text for a translator?

Join lines with spaces while keeping paragraphs to tidy broken lines and paragraph boundaries before translation. This does not promise better translation or automatically repair typos, formulas or reading order. Check existing hyphens and word spacing, then review the translation too.

Is the input text sent to or saved on a server?

The text is cleaned in the current browser without this tool uploading or saving it on a server. Copy writes the result to the operating system clipboard. Keep a separate original and clear your input and output after using a shared device. Browser-side processing does not guarantee every aspect of document security.
