Remove background and resize
Add images for a live preview using color, tolerance, outer/global removal, trimming and resizing. Process several files with the same settings and download each transparent PNG result.

Choose an image. How to remove backgrounds and resize
Use this tool to make a solid-color background transparent and resize the result. It suits product photos and design assets with a uniform background. Start with automatic corner sampling, outer-background removal and trimming, then inspect the preview. If needed, open the removal settings, choose another color or tolerance, and save a transparent PNG. Resizing reduces oversized images; it does not add detail or enlarge small originals.
This tool uses local color keying to identify colors close to the background. Default outer removal clears background connected to the corners; global removal also clears matching colors inside the subject. Reading, color calculations, trimming and PNG creation run in the browser without sending photos to Toolvil. Check source usage rights separately. It is suited to solid, uniform backgrounds; inspect complex backgrounds and fine hair edges yourself.
When this tool is needed
- Make a white or solid background transparent in product or stock photos.
- Prepare transparent PNG product images with consistent dimensions.
- Create cutouts for compositing and design.
Before converting
- Larger color differences between subject and background are easier to separate.
- Increase tolerance if background remains, or lower it if the subject disappears.
- Use transparent PNG to retain transparent areas.
How to use
- Drop images or click the upload area to choose files.
- The background is sampled automatically. Choose a color or click the preview if needed.
- Adjust the tolerance slider while checking the preview.
- Choose a shorter-edge limit or keep the processing size.
- Save the active transparent PNG, or process the batch and download each result.
Color keying and complex edges
Color keying sets transparency from distance to the chosen color, so contrast between subject and background matters. Default outer removal preserves enclosed colors; try global removal for interior gaps. If matching subject colors connect to the background, or a photo contains hair, glass or shadows, parts of the subject may disappear or background may remain. Place the saved PNG over its intended background to inspect the edges.
Choosing tolerance and background color
Automatic sampling works best when the corners show the background. If a corner contains the subject or a shadow, select a background color from the preview. Start with the default tolerance 40 and adjust while checking the subject edges. A higher value includes a wider range of nearby colors and may erase part of the subject; a lower value may leave shadows or background patches.
Outer removal, global removal, trimming and batches
There are two removal modes. Outer removal (Flood Fill) starts at the four corners and follows neighboring matching colors. It preserves matching colors enclosed inside the subject. Global removes matching colors anywhere, including interior holes, so inspect white or similarly colored subject details. Trim crops to the bounds of the remaining nontransparent pixels. Turn trimming off when you need to retain the processing canvas dimensions.
Added images keep their selected order, and the last image is the active preview. Adjust settings and process all to generate results and error cards in queue order. Automatic background color is sampled separately for each file; a manually chosen color applies to every file. Save with each result individual download link; there is no single ZIP. Changing settings or the queue clears previous batch results, so process again.
Processing method and output limits
Files must be 25MiB or smaller. Sources longer than 8000px are reduced proportionally before processing. Trimming uses the bounds of nontransparent pixels; fully transparent results retain the processing canvas size. PNG stores processed pixels and transparency, but this conversion is not for preserving original animation or camera metadata. Color picking reads the pre-removal color at the preview location after trimming and resizing. Check the browser download list after requesting a file.
Processing stays in your browser without sending images to a server or downloading an ML model. Batch results have individual downloads rather than a single ZIP. Quality depends on background uniformity, selected color, tolerance and removal mode. Keep the originals and inspect saved PNG files before using them.
FAQ
How does background removal work without AI?
The background color comes from the four-corner average or your selection. Default outer removal (Flood Fill) clears nearby colors connected to the corners. Global removal clears nearby colors anywhere in the image. Similarity uses RGB distance and tolerance, without an external AI model or image-processing API. Check and adjust the result when subject and background colors are similar.
Which photos work best?
White, solid or uniform backgrounds in product and stock photos work best when subject and background colors differ clearly. Complex backgrounds or similar colors may produce rough edges or remove parts of the subject. Adjust tolerance or choose a background color in the preview. This local color-key tool is intended for uniform backgrounds, so inspect detailed hair and translucent edges carefully.
How do I adjust tolerance?
Tolerance determines how close a color must be to the selected background to be removed. Larger values include a wider range of colors; smaller values remove only close matches. Increase it if background remains and lower it if the subject is erased. The preview updates as you move the slider.
How does resizing work?
Sources over 8000px on the longest edge are reduced proportionally first, then removal and optional trimming are applied. The 1000/2000/4000px choices reduce the shorter edge of that result and never enlarge small images. Keep original size skips this extra reduction. Trimming can still change canvas dimensions, so check the output size. This does not guarantee a publishing service minimum resolution or approval.
Are my images sent to a server?
No. Reading, background removal and PNG creation run in your browser. Toolvil does not send originals or results to its server or store them there. Local processing does not establish image usage rights; check that you have permission to use the source.
